I bought these since they had same load rating as the OEM tires and other snow tires considered did not have as high a load rating. Having driven these in true winter snowy/slushy conditions and on dry highway I can say these have surpassed my expectations. Excellent winter traction including on hardpack/ice. They are not squirrely on dry pavement like some snows can be and they are very quiet. I will certainly seek these out for my other truck next year.

If you live in a part of the country that has hard winters and slush, snow, and ice that linger on the ground and roads for weeks at a time, you already know how hard it can be to find tires for your vehicle that can confidently get you from point A to point B without landing you in a ditch (or worse). All-season tires can’t get the job done but, then again, staying home isn’t always an option.
Nope, when things are that nasty on the roads, the only thing for it is a winter tire that’s Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter service, with the kinds of design features that will claw through snow and slush (and even ice) to deliver real performance. That’s where the Toyo Observe GSi-6 comes in. The Toyo Observe GSi-6 is their studless winter tire for sedans, minivans, crossovers, and SUVs and is designed with some of the latest innovations in winter tire tech. It’s a tire that won’t let you down regardless of how dreadful the winter conditions might be, but don’t just take our word for it. Let’s jump in for a closer look with this Toyo Observe GSi-6 HP review.
Features and Benefits
The Toyo Observe GSi-6 is loaded with next-generation features and innovations for enhanced traction and performance in winter weather:
- Silica-enriched tread formulation stays flexible for traction in subfreezing weather and is designed for long, even wear on wet or snowy roads
- Bamboo-derived carbonic powder in rubber compound is designed to absorb the thin film of moisture on wet or icy roads for improved grip
- Ground walnut shells incorporated into tread compound are meant to bite into snow and ice to further enhance grip
- Aggressive winter tread design improves traction with large, paired inner tread blocks
- Serrated stability rib boosts road manners and control on wet or snowy pavement
- Advanced sipe design improves cornering, braking, stability on snow or ice
- Carbonic powder and ground walnut shells are both environmentally-friendly, sustainable ingredients
- Tread pitch is computer tuned to keep road noise low
- Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMS) rated for severe winter service
- Tapered buttresses toward shoulder and serrated tread grooves all work together for improved traction
Pros and Cons
So, is this Toyo winter tire the right choice for your ride and budget? Before you decide, let’s take a look at the tire’s strengths:
PROS:
- Noise levels are comparable to the best all-season or Grand Touring tires
- Confident traction even in hills, even on ice or deep snow
- Handling, braking, cornering are all predictable and easy to manage
- Shorter braking distances than competitors’ winter tires
Unfortunately, no tire is perfect and that’s true for the Observe GSi-6 HP too:
CONS:
- No pre-drilled holes for installation of studs
- Cannot be used when temperatures are consistently above 45 degrees Fahrenheit
- Not the most fuel efficient tire
SimpleTire’s view on Toyo Observe GSi-6 HP tires
If you’ve got a sedan, minivan, crossover, or smaller truck or SUV, traction in terrible winter conditions can be a real problem. The Toyo Observe GSi-6 HP is designed for just those kinds of problems. Toyo engineered this tire to take on the elements, starting with that tread formulation that’s infused with silica, ground walnut shells and bamboo-derived carbonic powder that all come together to dig into deep snow or ice. The directional tread pattern and staggered tread blocks all are designed as a system to claw through the worst road conditions, along with a dense network of sipes that provide hundreds of extra biting edges for traction.
Unfortunately, those traction-enhancing features also mean more rolling resistance, but for most drivers this isn’t going to be too much of a concern since this isn’t a year-round tire anyway. The softer, more pliable tread formulation of winter tires wears quickly in warmer weather, and tire manufacturers recommend that they not be used when temperatures are above 45 degrees F. And no, the Toy Observe GSi-6 HP isn’t pre-drilled for installation of studs – but road tests indicate that its traction on icy surfaces (including snowy roads that have frozen over with a crust of ice) is tenacious enough that studs aren’t really necessary.
Vehicles the Toyo Observe GSi-6 HP is a good replacement tire for

Tires provide great traction in all conditions. Very happy with my purchase and will definitely be buying them again.
I bought my 1st set of these Toyo tires for my 2004 Toyota Camry 3 winters ago...I was amazed at the difference they made for my old but very dependable car. I just bought another set - because I was sure 3 years ago those would be my last tires-& drove on them year round. Oh, forgot to mention we live in the Rocky Mountains = lots of snow & always feel confident driving.
Making fast turns with confidence! These tires stick to the road in all conditions!!
I slapped these bad boys on my 2015 Ford Focus hatchback and the snow covered roads felt like dry summer pavement. Excellent grip in the Michigan winter. I use these seasonally so they don't get much wear. Quiet, plush and the best part is they keep me on the road pointed in the right direction without a hint of slipping. No need for AWD when you have the right tires for winter. Regain your confidence in snow and ice no matter your car!
Typical noise of winter tires. Stops on a dime on Minnesota ice.
